This is a cruise book for the 1989-90 Westpac cruise of the USS Merrill DD-976, a Spruance DD-963 class Destroyer .
This book chronicles the 1989 to 1990 Western Pacific and Persian Gulf cruise of the Merrill where she patrolled the Pacific Ocean area to protect US interest in that region as well as duty in the Persian Gulf area to protect international shipping from attacks from Iranian forces.
For those unfamiliar with cruise books, they are heavily illustrated hardbacks that detail one deployment in the life of a ship. Very similar to high school yearbooks, they often have nice pictures of the ship, crew and places they visited during the trip. They are a great reference for model makers, naval enthusiasts, or historians. Of course, for someone who served on a particular ship, they would be a great remembrance!
These books are becoming increasingly rare as the years go by, the Spruance class have all been decommissioned and either sunk as targets in Sinkex excercises or scrapped, Only a couple of them are still in storage awaiting their fate. The Merrill was sunk in a Sinkex excersise back in August of 2003. She also was in the movie Pearl Harbor while being stored at East Loch of Pearl Harbor awaiting her fate.
