VINTAGE 1969 USS HORNET CVS APOLLO 12 COMMEMORATIVE MUG

SIZE: 4.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER (BASE) BY 5.125 INCHES HIGH BY 3.25 INCHES IN DIAMETER (TOP)

My uncle proudly served aboard the USS Hornet (CVS-12), which had the honor of being the prime recovery vessel for Apollo 12's November 24th splashdown from their 1969 moon expedition. (Click to supersize the photos shown above.) Crew members were issued this now very rare ceramic mug commemorating the special occasion. The front bears a stylized logo in blue and gold on the mug's cream base depicting Apollo 12 in the various stages of its splashdown in the foreground and the profile of the USS Hornet in the background. Over it all shines a round golden moon. Concentric golden circles outline the image and contain the banner words USS HORNET CVS/APOLLO 12, with the 12 in a gold-rimmed circle of its own.

On the back, concentric blue circles bearing the words APOLLO TWELVE MOON EXPLORATION in gold surround a blue and gold picture of Apollo 12 heading skyward towards a blue and gold depiction of the lunar landing module. Below this round image are the words, in gold, USS HORNET - CVS-12/PRIME RECOVERY VESSEL/1969. Both the top and bottom of this high-quality mug also are rimmed in gold.

This rare vintage souvenir of the Apollo 12 moon expedition and the naval seamen who served in its execution is in excellent condition, with slight scuff marks on the bottom from being displayed and minor (not overall) crazing. The decorations and gold edging are perfectly intact except for a flea bite in the decal of the first S in USS on the front. The bottom even still bears the original clear and gold sticky label, which says, “Florence Ceramic Co. A SUBSIDIARY OF Scripto”. The slant-sided mug measures approximately 4-1/2 inches in diameter at the base, 3-1/4 inches in diameter at the top, and stands approximately 5-1/8 inches high. It holds approximately 2 cups of liquid -- perfect for quaffing the day's ration of grog after the arduous task of recovering the splashdown module.
