What happens to a person after becoming a Christian?

The Becomers is Keith Miller's answer to this question. He believes the new convert has just been freed to start actualizing gifts and potentialities which have always been inherent in his life - but which he may have been afraid to face. He is a "becomer" in process, a Christian on the move toward deeper and more honest relationaships with people, with God, and with himself. Conversion, then, is only the beginning.

Through his encounters with small groups, Mr. Miller discovered how difficult it is to communicate twentieth-century faith in nineteenth-century language. He reports, "I have searched everywhere for words and symbols to describe that which is taking place in my own life and throughout the church. It is out of this struggle to find and develop communication models for becomers that this book is written."

In a manner that has become uniquely and refreshingly his own, Keith Miller delves into the subterranean caverns of the mind and spirit of a group of new Christians produced by the contemporary church renewal movement. Their vibrant, involved life-style raises some serious questions:

  • What's inside, behind our masks?
  • What happens in conversion?
  • What about Christian growth?
  • How does a becomer face the world?

A becomer is a Christian willing to risk psychological and material securities in the world for others, and thus for God. "We are in the process of becoming whole as we reach out with open and creative hands toward work, people, and God."
