Stunning Chinese Carved Soapstone Vase w/ Birds Flowers

Up for auction is an older Chinese Carved Soapstone Vase in exquisite condition other than needing a little dusting. This vase is approximately 11 inches tall and nearly nine inches at the base.

The colors of the stone used lend to its overall beauty. The five carved birds take advantage of the stone’s natural colors with nearly all black to multicolored. There are also a number of blossoms that are presumably peonies, opened and in the process of opening along with detailed leaves across the entire front of the vase.

The vase has nearly a triangular shape although more rounded on the back than coming to a true point.

There are no cracks; however there is a small area on the back that appears to have been worked (see picture) and a spot on the rim behind the decoration that appears to have been done around the time of carving although it is not perfectly smooth like the remainder of the rim (tried to show it in a picture as well).

This is an extremely heavy piece.

This vase really is a MUST-SEE and would make a good addition to your oriental collection or as a stand-alone on your hall table.

Thanks for looking!

Questions and answers about this item
Q: Hi, When looking at the photo of the spot on the rim behine the decoration it appears to have a crack right below it. Does it go all the way through the vase or is it just a surface fracture? thanks
A: Does not appear to go all the way through and upon closer inspection there are several of these and most are where there are changes in the color of the stone. Appear to be surface fractures inherent in the stone. Thanks... Continue reading
