Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.) Ding Kiln White Pedestal Bowl

Classic early Song Dynasty Ding Kiln white porcelain pedestal bowl in excellent original production condition with appropriate aging.  This piece has the beautiful simplistic profile that distinguishes the early Ding kiln. Straight sided pedestal that flares out slightly at the foot, bowl flaring out at 80 degree angle forming the bowl with delicate upturn to the rim.  Dimensions 6 cm tall, bowl 2 ½ cm tall, pedestal 3 ½ cm tall, bowl rim diameter 14 cm, foot diameter 8 ½ cm.

This piece is original because:

1 -  Black underglaze spotting typical of early Ding.

2 - Manganese crystals visible under magnification showing that the piece had been in the ground for a long time.

3 - Temper sand fused in the glaze around the foot.

4 - Linear flash mark 2 ½ cm above foot reflecting a small bowl placed next to this piece in the kiln.

5 - Glaze is a light grayish/blue white typical of the early Ding.

6 - Exquisite appropriate grazing for a piece of this age.

These form was used as altar offering vessel.

If you have any questions or require additional information please call me at 520-429-0177.

In addition to myself this piece has been verified by  Fred Gumbart and David Fredericks.  Mr. Fred Gumbart is the owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries (520-322-6388) and on antiquitiesplus.com. He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations, and he is an official, licensed, and accredited appraiser of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts.  Fred is a lifelong, serious collector of art, antiques and artifacts, and has been seen on the PBS History Detectives TV Show concerning antiques and artifacts.

Mr. David Fredericks is curator and authenticator of Antiquities Plus in Tucson, Arizona (520-795-0061) and on antiquitiesplus.com. His knowledge of Asian art, particularly jades, is equal to any I have seen.  His use of microscopic analysis and sequential attribute confirmation in verifying a pieces life history and condition is unique. He is impeccable and at times brutally honest.
