(6/2009)~ Turntables that transform your old vinyl collection into sparkling digital MP3 files are nothing new, but the new Denon DP-200USB dispenses with one of their drawbacks - it cuts out the PC middleman and squirts your freshly digitised tunes direct to a USB device. Yep, you just whack in a USB memory stick or external hard disk, and the Denon DP-200USB will instantly convert any record you play into 192kbps MP3 files and dump them directly onto the storage device. Of course, it helps if you do have a PC - the included Trans Music Converter software allows you to edit tracks on a computer, as well as automatically divide recordings into separate tracks. It’ll even use its Audio Waveform Recognition skills to identify the tracks and tag them with meta-data from the Gracenote database. At only £200, we’d be surprised if the Denon DP-200USB matched the sonic superbness of Denon’s high-end hi-fi gear, but as a way to bring your ageing vinyl library into the digital age, it seems fairly affordable.
