The story begins in 2032, when Japan is inhabited by the dwindling race of humans, purely mechanical androids, and cyborgs. Like public security offier Batou, his body is fully artificial and the only remnants left of his humanity are traces of his brain and the memories of a woman called Motoko. One day, he is sent to investigate a series of murder. The perpetrators are apparently the gynoids - androids made in the form of young women, used as sex dolls - that have malfunctioned. Batou thinks he is getting closer to the truth but it's until he runs into Motoko that he knows the truth is far beyond his knowledge......"
