其實早在1989年年底發片的《新樂園》合輯裡，羅大佑就曾經貢獻過一首台語歌《故鄉》，這首歌作於1987年年底。羅大佑自美國移居香港，在「近鄉情 怯」的心境中自然而然地用了台語來配合旋律的走勢，而這首直接抒發鄉愁的作品也成為他自己最喜歡的歌曲之一。之後羅大佑基於專業上的考慮，認為自己對台語 的掌握還不夠嫻熟，所以他後來的台語歌詞都和李坤城或王武雄合作，《故鄉》也成為他迄今唯一一首完全由自己作詞作曲的台語歌。《原鄉》企宣造勢的規模比 《愛人同志》還大，也的確造成了話題。對台語的聽眾來說，除了羅大佑唱「台語搖滾」帶來的新鮮感，這也是頭一次聽到他讓別人在專輯中詮釋自己的作品。林 強，周華健，趙傳，李宗盛，鳳飛飛，娃娃都是知名度甚高的歌者；台語歌詞和李坤城等人的合作，加上花比傲的編曲佔了極大的比重，都衝淡不少羅大佑的個人色 彩，使《原鄉》比較像是一張由羅大佑主導的合輯，而非個人專輯。

明眼人當能看出這樣的手法和《皇后大道東》如出一轍，甚至連兩張專輯的許多旋律都是共通的。這些作法造成當時許多人質疑羅大佑缺乏誠意，才氣枯竭，才會出 此下策來個「一魚兩吃」；樂評人翁嘉銘則批評《原鄉》的內容「模糊搖擺，不統不獨」。這驅使羅大佑在次年初寫了一篇長文具細靡遺地闡述當時他的創作理念， 也對這樣的指摘提出毫不留情的反擊，這篇後來只在一小群人中間留傳的文字，提供了相當豐富的第一手資料，對瞭解羅大佑眼中的《原鄉》，以及之前之後的《皇 后大道東》與《首都》兩張唱片都有很大的幫助。

根據羅大佑自己的說法，「一曲多用」不僅不是投機取巧，反而是朝向新的音樂可能性開發的嘗試，他的野心是用同一個曲調，便能毫無滯疑地配上粵語，國語，台 語，並且能在不同的時空背景下各自扣含當地特有的文化與時代內涵，唱出在地人的心聲。這樣的野心有點像是早年用「勸世歌」，「思想枝」之類的固定調式，卻 能承載千千萬萬種不同內容的唱詞，所以對他來說「一魚兩吃」還不夠，最好「五吃，十吃甚至一百吃」。姑且不論這個企圖成功與否，若僅以「投機取巧」去批判 他，的確是把問題看得太簡單了。

在主題上，從《皇后大道東》到《原鄉》乃至《首都》，羅大佑一直想探討「移民」這個課題。從紐約的華埠到殖民地香港，羅大佑看到的華人絕大多數都是移民者 的後裔，甚至連台灣島上絕大多數的住民，無論本省籍、外省籍都還是移民者的後代，只不過渡海來台的順序不同罷了。身居香港卻以台灣為原鄉的羅大佑，不禁對 這兩個地方新舊移民一再發生衝突的歷史產生莫大的感慨。這一系列的作品，其實是從各個不同的角度在觀照這兩個佈滿了移民後裔的華人世界，以及羅大佑認為我 們最終不能迴避的，血脈相連的故土——中國。在旋律和編曲上，羅大佑花了極大的工夫讓音樂能貼切地傳達他腦海中移民後裔對「動亂」和「流亡」與生俱來的敏 銳觸覺，希望能用多樣化的曲式來描繪新舊移民的歷史、未來與情感。

Goldmine Magazine Record Grading Standard (By Visually/Not Sounding)
M = Mint - Perfect, flawless, Brand New.
M- or NM = Mint Minus or Near Mint – Usually the highest grade. Records from the 1950s & 60s in this condition are truly rare. 
Ex = Excellent–Beautiful collectible condition. Only the slightest of wear, certainly no deep scratches.
VG+ = Very Good Plus - Great condition. Well cared for.
VG = Very Good – Still good condition, but more wear than VG+.
VG- = Very Good Minus - Generally not collectible condition, unless it's a super rare record. Most dealers avoid records in this shape or below.
G = Good–Lots of wear, but still playable. The most confusing grade! Good really does not mean good. It is actually quite poor condition.
WBR = Wrecked But Rare–Otherwise known as a Starter Copy. Not cracked, but a starter copy.
