New Cambridge Shakespeare - The Merchant Of Venice (Literature)

190 pages

Item Description
Selling many of my Literature Guidebooks to clear cupboards for more space. These guidebooks are excellent resources for answering questions, writing good essays or enriching the understanding of the Literature text.

The book is in excellent condition with no written marks within the book. Bend mark on the front cover and some discolouration spots noted on book due to natural aging but this remains one of the best and most interesting Merchant of Venice Guidebooks.

Back of Book
The Merchant of Venice has been performed more often than any other comedy by Shakespeare. This edition pays special attention to the expectations of its first audience, and to our modern experience of seeing and hearing the play. The book investigates the historical background, showing that the play blends two types of contemporary comedy, the one romantic, the other urban. It explores the Englishman's myth of Venice, Elizabethan notions of equity, the position of Jews in society and attitudes towards them. An appendix discusses Shakespeare's familiarity with and use of biblical allusion in the play. The introduction leads the reader through the play as it is realised on stage and shows how Shakespeare manupulates our response on character. A stage history, accompanied by photographs and drawings, reveals how these allegiances are altered in performance according to prevailing political or social trends.
