The Sun’s Rays & You – How Will UV Rays Affect Your Skin?

UVA Rays
Penetrate the skin deeply and are the major contributor for wrinkling, discolouration, and other visible signs of ageing that may not show up for years. The intensity of UVA radiation is more constant than UVB. UVA is not filtered by glass.

UVB Rays
Affect the outer layer of skin and are the primary agent responsible for sunburns and tanning. UVB is most intense between 10 am and 2 pm when the sunlight is brightest.

The sun never takes a day off. Even when it seems to be out of sight, its invisible rays cause great damage to our skin. Overexposure to UV rays does more to the skin than helping to tan. It is the main factor that causes premature skin ageing and skin cancer.

While many believe that only beach-goers or those who stay out for long hours under the sun are at risk, no one is spared. Even short, unplanned daily exposure is harmful to unprotected skin - walking, doing quick outdoor errands or driving. UV rays can easily pass through windows or glass in your home and cars. Using an umbrella or wide-brimmed hat does not protect you totally as harmful UV rays can reflect off the surface of the ground, exposing you to UV radiation.

In fact, it is possible to tan and get burned even on hazy or cloudy days as damaging rays are still getting through. Being indoors isn’t safe either as fluorescent light bulbs emit both UVA & UVB rays that cause damage to skin!

How UV Radiation Affect Our Skin?

• Premature Skin Ageing
  Prolonged and repeated exposure to UV rays can cause skin damage. UV radiation is absorbed in the dermis and causes collagen to break down at a higher rate than with normal ageing. Elastic tissues degenerate and result in the development of wrinkles, sagging and pigmented skin. 90% of skin ageing symptoms - age spots, freckles, wrinkles, lost of skin elasticity, discolouration, dry, leathery skin is caused by UV exposure.
  
• DNA Damage
  Exposure to UV radiation causes formation of free radicals that can damage cell function and alter its genetic material. DNA acts as the cell’s ‘brain’. Once it is damaged, skin cells lose their ability to function properly. Damaged cells replicate abnormally and can potentially harm other cells.
  
• Skin Cancer
  In the long run, UV radiation causes irreversible effects. It not only accelerates skin ageing but increases risk of skin cancer with the changing of cells’ genetic material (RNA and DNA). UV rays from the sun are responsible for more than 90% of all skin cancers, affecting millions of people around the world.

Understanding Sunblocks/Sunscreens

Sunblocks work by absorbing, reflecting or scattering the sun’s rays on the skin. Broad-spectrum sunblocks protect against both UVA and UVB rays to prevent short-term as well as long-term damaging effects of sunlight.

Types of Sun Protection

1. SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
SPF indicates how much longer our skin will take to burn when sunblock is used compared to unprotected skin. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection from sunburn.
E.g.: If you normally burn under the sun in 10 minutes, theoretically, applying a SPF15 sunblock will keep you safe in the sun for approximately 150 minutes before you start to burn.

2. PA (Protection Grade of UVA)

Dos & Don’ts

• Use a broad-spectrum sunblock (of the highest SPF and PA values) that blocks both UVA and UVB rays daily
• Apply sunblock generously and evenly to cover all areas that maybe exposed to sunlight (face and body) even on hazy or cloudy days
• Reapply sunblock when necessary
• Avoid mid-day sun (10 am to 4 pm) when sun’s rays are strongest
• Avoid direct sun exposure – use umbrella, wear wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses (that filters 99-100% UV radiation), protective clothing with sunblock on. UV rays can still bounce off sand, water, porch deck etc
• Never leave little ones without adequate protection from the sun. Studies suggest that over-exposure early in life may lead to skin cancers later on

Children are particularly at risk to the threats of UV rays due to frequent and overexposure to the sun. Kids love to spend their day outdoors - at school or even after school. Participation in sports, Physical Education (PE), extra curricular activities, outdoor games with neighbours/ friends even while waiting for their transportation after school expose them to harmful UV rays.
