***HONG KONG RARE KM-24 1 cent PCGS AU-53*** Extremely Rare Coin - Only 30 to 50 Known
This is the actual coin you are bidding on This 1941 one cent coin was minted at the Royal Mint. It was apparently shipped on two different vessels in late 1941. One is believed to either recalled or was sunk and the other was possibly captured by the Japanese. The Japanese, it is said, melted down the coins for making war materiel. It is believed that a few were saved from destruction as souvenirs. This is a one year type coin and the estimated population reports vary from under 30 to about 50 worldwide. There are proofs that are apparently slightly more common than the circulation strikes as mints in Canada and Australia de-accessioned their duplicate specimens in the 1970s and 1980s. PCGS has only graded one of these MS coins, this one, and one Proof. NGC has only graded one circulation strike as well, an AU-58. The one in NGC AU-58 was listed on eBay at $16,000 from a seller in China. It ultimately sold to an Australian buyer for US$11,500. Champion Auctions in Hong Kong sold one in VF condition to a U.S. buyer for US$5,520 in their June 22 2008 auction. Here are side-by-side images of that coin and the one offered for auction here :
A PCGS PR-64RB specimen just sold in a British auction for £8,000 (approximately US$13,000). This is the PCGS AU-53 coin. The top picture is a zoom on the coin. The middle picture is a scan of the PCGS holder which unfortunately does not show the coin detail. The bottom picture is a photograph of the slab that shows the detail on the coin. Here is the KM listing from the 35th edition which you can see is outdated by the sale results described above:
