Green Tara appears as young beautiful maiden. Her body is green in colour. She has one face and two arms, wears a crown bedecked with five buddha images. She sits on lotus throne in Lalita attitude in half lotus posture. Her left hand shows the gesture of refuge vows and right hand the varada mudra because she is quick to answer the petitions of those who seek her aid. Tara is known as the great liebrator from eight kinds of danger or fears. The cultivation of  Tara sadhana will eliminate all demoniac and karmic obstacles, eradicates disaster and lengthen one's life span.

There are 21 forms of  Tara. In reality they are all the transformed bodies of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of compassion.Tara represents the entire enlightened activities of all Buddhas and  hence she is called the mother of the Buddhas of three times. It is said in a sutra that Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva saved and ferried over countless suffering beings from the sea of birth and death.   source: Min Bahadur Shakya, The Iconography of Nepalese Buddhism

Green Tara  Thangka Newar  ART NEPAL

The beauituful Green Tara  Thangka is painted under the description of Master Indra Lama. The Thangka is painted by the Student from the Indra Lama and the final touch is given by the Master Indra Lama.
The thangka is detailed painted with Gold.  The buddha Shakyamuni Thangka is beautifully framed in Silk Brocade.

Canvas Prepartion:

The cloth to be painted undergoes a complex process of preparation which takes between 14 to 20 days depending on local climatic conditions. In Nepal foggy Himalayan foothills, canvasses for the whole year must be made in the dry months of March, April, October and November. If a canvas is improperly prepared, the entire thangka or thanka will be a failure

Mixing paint:

It takes a full day to prepare the five primary colors. Traditionally, the materials included a variety of mineral and vegetable substances: minerals, precious stones, bark, leaves, flowers (especially the rock rose), gold, silver, copper, etc. Each had to be collected from its source in different areas of Tibet , cleaned, ground, powered, crushed or cooked.

There are various use of Thangka Paintings. Thangka or Thanka serve many purposed in Tibetan  & Newari society

  •     In a temple, thangka are uses for worship and meditation of a priest, and practice of specific Buddhism.
  •     Thangka are intended to serve as a record of, and guide for contemplative experience. For example, you might be instructed by your teacher to imagine yourself as a specific figure in a specific setting. You could use a thangka as a reference for the details of posture, attitude, colour, clothing. etc., of a figure located in a field, or in a palace, possibly surrounded by many other figures of meditation teachers, your family, etc..   In this way, thangkas are intended to convey iconographic information in a pictorial manner. A text of the same meditation would supply similar details in written descriptive form.
