Perkaraan Dajjal berasal dari perkataan dajala yang bererti menutupi (sesuatu).

Kamus Lisanul 'Arab mengemukakan beberapa pendapat mengapa disebut Dajjal:

Ia disebut Dajjal, kerana ia adalah pembohong yang menutupi kebenaran dengan kepalsuan.
Ia menutupi bumi dengan bilangnnya yang besar.
Ia menutupi manusia dengan kekafiran.
Ia tersebar dan menutupi seluruh muka bumi.

Perkataan Dajjal tidak tentera di dalam Al-Quran, tetapi di dalam hadis sahih diterangkan, bahawa 10 ayat pertama dan 10 ayat terakhir dari Surah Al-Kahfi akan melindungi orang dari fitnahnya Dajjal.
