Authentic engraved stock certificate from the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) issued in late 1950s . The certificate is original, not a copy or reproduction. This certificate has an ornate border around it with a vignette of telephones circling the globe. It also has the company's corporate seal dated 1885 at the bottom center. The certificate is in good condition for its age and does have fold marks and one or two small stray pen marks on the face or border. Since the certificate is cancelled it has no investment value, its value that of a collectible historic document. These are hard to find and quite attractive. The telegraph and the telephone, both important breakthroughs in communication, were developed during the 19th century. With their introduction, people, for the first time in history, were able to communicate over long distances instantaneously. Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) was trying to improve the telegraph when he invented the telephone in 1876. A teacher of the deaf, Bell based his invention on the vibrations of the diaphragm in the human ear. Thousands of improvements were subsequently made by others, but Bell’s basic patent remains one of the most valuable ever issued by the U.S. patent office. By 1910, more than seven million telephones were in use in the United States. Please note that old stock certificates are becoming a hot collectible due not only to their historical significance but the fact that with the advent of electronic trading companies are not issuing shares in the quantities they did in the past. Accordingly, they are becoming harder to find and presumably more valuable. Please review my feedback and bid with confidence. |
