This is a collectible set of reproduction ancient Chinese treasure coins and stamp set.

In the remote world of antiquity, barter was the common practice. Then, with an upsurge of commercial growth, cowrie shells began to be used as a medium of exchange. Soon there emerged the imitation cowries as supply of natural sea shells had scarely met demand in trade transactions.
In China, the introduction of coinage dates back to as early as the Xia Dynasty (c. 21st-16th centuries BC). From then onwards, a great variety of coins came out with the development of the ancient money economy. Many of these varieties, however, are hardly available today due to historical evolution and dynastic changes. The very few handed down from ancient times are thus cherished as a rare treasure of immense value, hence significant part of China's historical relics.
With a view to reviving the original features of the ancient Chinese coins, this collection of handicraft antique coins were made after much consulting work with historical records and other reference material. Remodeled with quality powdered copper and advanced technology, this collection, 13 pieces in all ranging from that of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-256 BC) to that of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), well illustrates the progress of the ancient Chinese coinage in a farily systematic way. This series of handicraft coins will be of both ornamental and collection value, with which collectors may better understand China's history and her ancient economic and cultural development.

Item comes complete with silk cloth velvet box; literature booklet explaning the coins; and an 'Ancient coins' stamp set released by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China on October 29, 1981. The set of 8 special stamps entitled 'Ancient Coins of China' (serial number T.65), measures 30x40mm. Engraved, photogravured and chromatographed. A truly collectible coin and stamp set from China, excellent for historians and numismatics collectors.
