Up for auction is an 'ancient currency'
Malay Archipelago Coin Pendant crafted by the famed Royal Selangor.
For centuries, tin was a prized commodity in the Malay Archipelago. The earliest form of currency was solid blocks of tin, minted in the shape of animals such as crocodiles, elephants and cockerels. Early coinage, the tin pitis emerged in the early 20th century with the influx of merchants from Europe, Middle East and China. The pitis featured Arabic or Jawi inscriptions and were cast in the form of coin tress, similar to Chinese copper coins. These reproductions are crafted in pewter, an alloy of tin.
