This is a faceted amethyst pendant which was part of an Egyptian necklace dating to the New Kingdom period, C.1550-1300 BC.  That makes it about 3500 years old.  It is tear shaped and 9.7 mm or over 1/3 inch long.  It is pierced with a very small hole because it was strung on gold wire originally.  A similar necklace is shown in Jewelry Through 7000 Years (British Museum publication) on page 59.  As with that example, this one was one a series in graduated sizes which made up the necklace.  When we bought it, the necklace was incomplete and we are selling the pendants individually.  They come in a jewelry box with certification of authenticity and make a beautiful thoughtful gift.


Amethyst is one of our oldest recorded gemstones. Many ancient Egyptian tombs, dating back thousands of years had articles of jewelry with amethyst set in them.
